Which Materials Carry Sound Waves Best?
Grade Level: 3 thru 7
Category: Physics
Awards Won: 3rd Place, 6th Physical Science, PCA Science Fair
Hypothesis: The rubber band will carry sound waves the best because it stretches.
Primary Materials Used: 8oz Plastic Cups, String, Rubber Bands, Copper Wire, Microphone, Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, Speakers
Details: Click Here to see the complete free science fair project "Which Materials Carry Sound Waves Best?" This project elaborates on the idea of tieing two cups together with a string and using them as an old fashioned communication device! Using this same principle, different materials were used to connect two cups together, including string, copper wire and rubber bands. After the device was assembled, one cup was placed next to a speaker attached to a signal generator. The other cup was placed next to speaker attached to an oscilloscope.

Different frequencies were tested and the size of the output on the oscilloscope was recorded to see which substance carried the sound the best. Although expensive items like an oscilloscope and signal generator are needed for this experiment, you should be able to find these devices in the science department of your school.
